Rotation Seals, Shaft Seals, and Oil Seals
Rotary shaft seals – which are also known as radial shaft seals, include lip seals and oil seals which are required to provide reliable sealing performance in a wide range of high-speed rotating applications.
The main function of a rotary shaft seal is to enable friction-free operation by preventing lubricant from leaking from the assembly out through the clearance gap between the shaft and housing. A rotary shaft seal will also be required to prevent any potential contaminants from entering the housing environment.
Single or multi lip designs including cassette seals, can be neatly packaged into an abundance of rotating equipment. Combinations of seals can also be utilised in extreme cases to offer levels of performance and durability which are not possible when using individual components.
Elastomer compounds are available that offer a thermal range of -60⁰C to +200⁰C and a broad spectrum of chemical resistance. Often overlooked is the requirement for elastomers with excellent ozone and weathering properties as well having excellent abrasion resistance to ensure trouble free operation over extended periods of operation.
FTL Technology will identify the exact adaptations which need to be made in order to optimise a rotary shaft seal for its intended application. Alongside the dimensions of the shaft itself, these considerations include:
- Temperature
- Pressure
- Media to be sealed against
- Type/volume of potential contaminant in the operating environment
By customising your rotary shaft seal assembly effectively, you can expect significant reductions in downtime and operating costs, as well as a longer operating life for all connected equipment. To find the best shaft seal solution for your operations, contact our sealing engineers today.
